Welcome to the Magic of Macy's

Take home the best of Chicago

Macy's on State Street

Chicago

Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Macy's State Street is a Macy's flagship destination and a true American original. Join generations of Chicagoans as you shop and dine your way through this historic building filled with the best in fashion, cuisine and more. While this page is dedicated to the State Street store, there is also a second Macy's location on Michigan Avenue in Water Tower Place.

The Walnut Room

The Walnut Room has the distinction of being the first restaurant in a department store, and it's also the longest continuously running restaurant in the country. Opened in 1907, the popular dining and gathering spot was originally known as the South Tea Room. It became known among the ladies of Chicago as The Walnut Room due to its beautiful Circassian Walnut paneling, and by 1937 the affectionate nickname had become the official name. A chicken pot pie dish that inspired the restaurant is still a standout on the menu. The world-famous 45-foot Great Tree graces The Walnut Room from late November to early January each year.

The Tiffany Ceiling

Admire the world’s largest Tiffany vaulted ceiling made of colorful iridescent glass. This spectacular work of art was installed in 1907 and contains over 1.6 million pieces of the sparkling hand-fired glass. Louis Comfort Tiffany designed and personally supervised the ceiling’s installation, and it took 50 artisans on scaffolds 1½ to 2 years to complete. At the time, a Chicago newspaper reporter wrote that we had “Michelangelo in our midst!” Gaze at the ceiling up-close on the 5th Floor, or view it from a distance in Cosmetics on the 1st Floor.

Great Granite Pillars

Installed in the portico in 1902, only the pillars at the Temple of Karnak in Egypt are taller. View the Great Granite Pillars at the State Street entrance.

The Great Clocks

Weighing in at over seven tons each, these massive and elegant timepieces have kept Chicago on time for more than a century. Legend has it that Marshall Field decided to install a clock after finding notes wedged in the corners of the store windows - notes meant for friends, family and business associates advising when a meeting or rendezvous would take place. The first clock was installed in 1897, instantly becoming a popular meeting spot; a second clock was added down the street in 1902. The Great Clocks remain a popular meeting place for Chicagoans and visitors alike, serving as stately icons of Chicago and "making State Street, that Great Street!" The clocks are memorialized in Norman Rockwell's painting The Clock Mender. View these historic timekeepers in person at the corner of State Street and Washington Street and the corner of State Street and Randolph Street.
